Ladies and gentlemen, Cloak and Swagger present an internet exclusive for your worthy eyes; an interview with the legendary dancefloor filler DJ Yoda ahead of his Village Underground, London show this Friday, November 1st.
Firstly, thanks for taking time to talk to Cloak & Swagger. Can you tell us a bit about your current tour and what the audience can expect?
I’m working with audio and video – DJing, and simultaneously mixing video from YouTube, movies, or anything that I think is cool. So it’s a mixture of a whole bunch of different things that I think are cool.
Roots Manuva is a legend on the UK urban scene; what was it like working with him on your track “U No Likey Like That”?
That’s exactly why I wanted to work with him – because he’s a legend. Before Tinie, before Dizzy, there was Roots! He was great to work with – he totally got the concept of the track immediately.
We know your DJ roots lie in hip-hop, who are you loving on the scene at the moment?
It’s a great year for hip-hop – there’s been music that I love from artists as diverse as Action Bronson, Kanye, The Doppelgangaz, Danny Brown, Prodigy, Durag Dynasty…
You’ve now dabbled with countless genres in your work especially in the “How To Cut and Paste” series; were any genres particularly challenging? (We have country/western in mind!)
Haha – yep I like the idea of using turntables and skills that would traditionally be used in hip-hop to work with other types of sounds. I loved using scratching and mixing to work with country, it just sounded really different to me. The same with my 1930s mix.
Following on from that; are there any styles of music you wouldn’t touch/tend to shy away from?
I just try and stay really honest to the music that I love. I have broad tastes in terms of genres, and I wouldn’t be scared to play anything that I genuinely liked – whether it was kids music, 80s music, whatever. The only thing I wouldn’t touch is music that I’m not feeling.
Can fans hope to see you playing any more club dates or even festivals in the new year?
Absolutely. My dates are all online – but I’ve just come back from Asia – I’m gonna be touring Australia and New Zealand after Christmas, and loads of other places all round Europe, too.
