Some say the problem with our generation is that we have nothing to fight for. At least, we act that way. This lack of a cause leads to apathy and boredom. Which leads to spending lots of time on the Internet. Sure, we’re happy on some superficial level, but deep down, beneath the Facebook statuses and twitter feeds, we realise we have no calling in this world and cry ourselves to sleep. And now a new study from Leeds University links internet use to depression! In short, we’re screwed. Destined to wander the world aimlessly until we OD on plant food or worse still, grow OLD.
I recall a simpler time, one that I’ve not actually lived in but have read about in books. A time when people fought for liberty. For freedom. But what were they really fighting for? In ‘The Plumed Serpent’ D.H. Lawrence writes,

‘There is no such thing as liberty. The greatest liberators are usually slaves of an idea. The freest people are slaves to convention and public opinion, and more still, slaves to the industrial machine. There is no such thing as liberty. You can only change one sort of domination for another. All we can do is change our master’

So, who’s your master?
