She’s so Precious

Written by Aba

If ‘Precious’ the film were a piece of maki sushi, it would contain a simultaneously alluring and repulsive combination of sensations. Like salmon and avocado with crunchy ants.

And that’s exactly why you should see it. There are no rainbows and hopping bunnies in this film, but you don’t expect that anyway. If you’ve read any reviews than you’ll already know the background. Clarice ‘Precious’ Jones, a dangerously obese girl living in the ghetto, is just trying to make it through high school. Until she falls pregnant with her second child (who will be her own sibling as she was raped by her father) — and it all suddenly seems to come undone.

But don’t let the Jerry Springer inspired storyline put you off. You will laugh as much as you want to cry. I spent most of the movie wondering how poor kids in the Bronx could still afford to look so hip. Rockin’ around in high tops and fluorescent adidas jackets. The boys had fades, the girls had curtain fringes drooping over oversized frames. There was high waist grey wash denim, fitted leather skirts and red lipstick abound. Vintage house anthems dominated the soundtrack. Then I realised it was set in the early 90’s.

Funny how (no)things change(d).

Cloak and Swagger recommends it.
