Sell Me Sex

Sex Sells. Its an insatiable fact, like the rotation of the Earth, sharing your last Rolo and Lady GaGa’s penis. It’s not a hard sell, actually it’s pretty easily to get the titillation started. On deeper inspection it’s not really the x-rated that sells – the illusion of sex is more power than the act itself. And for those who believe that sex isn’t a huge selling point – there is no sale without a willing buyer. As sure as golden showers are golden, everyone is a buyer.

Tom Ford, the one man designer impresario and former creative director of Gucci has always fascinated me. You may also recognise the name from the recently cinematic release of ‘A Single Man’, I’m sure that must be a first somewhere for a designer to have launched their own film. His aptly named label Tom Ford, doesn’t only sell sex, it crams it down your throat. It may surprise you to learn that Tom is gay; ever greater the accomplishment is that for a gay man he can sell sex to a straight guy. His rampant success and must have designs owe a great deal to his ability to tap into the sexually pre-occupied heterosexual male mind and sell him sex.

Sex finds itself in every aspect of his brand, from advertising campaigns through to perfume bottles, sex is the DNA that makes Tom Ford the brand that it is. Running your hand along the glossy, black finish of his Black Orchid perfume bottle and one can’t help but feel their curiosity peaked, its erogenous tip fires off phallic images in one’s deeper thoughts.

As much as we wish to rise above and beyond our primeval urges and raging hormones we can’t escape our nature. As we battle to control our inner desires it is labels such as this that will become the success stories of tomorrow, by allowing us to buy the glammed up, super stylish sex objects that we crave. Welcome to the age of sex as a commodity.
