Lyrics Versus Beats

The roots of hip-hop and intrinsically it’s greatest strength lie in the art of storytelling. A powerful medium giving voice to an oppressed people, hip-hop acts as a the Bayeux Tapestry of our times. The eternal raconteur whose views do not always run parallel to those of society. Hip-hop has undeniably changed markedly in the last few years, even it’s staunchest supporters agree that although its reach has increased tenfold, quality has been somewhat lost in the process.

The power and reach of the money now in the industry has shifted the focus from lyrics to beats. We can all nod our heads to a banging track but not everyone gets or even likes the lyrics of artists such as Immortal Technique.
