The Age Of ‘The Follower’

In these days of the followed and the followers it is easy to lose that teetering grip on reality and sink ever further down the rabbit hole where voyeurism resides. On the week that Lady Gaga hit 1 billion views on YouTube – purely in terms of figures that’s around 1 view for every man, woman, and child on Earth; I fired up my iTunes on shuffle mode I was presented with Bat For Lashes’s second album; Two Suns. Already a big fan of Natasha Khan’s work, the gorgeous half Pakistani half British singer, I needed little more encouragement to start trawling the Internet for the best part of an hour searching out every photo and article on her. Keeping the song on repeat I became almost robotic in my search, leaving quite literally no stone unturned.
Our obsession with celebrity and our rampant curiosity has been fed by the wealth of information at our fingertips. Following those we admire on Twitter, receiving updates via Facebook and being able to search a trillion sites on our new beau feeds this unstoppable hunger. I know nothing of Natasha, she could quite honestly be the devil incarnate yet still I choose to idolise her and her haunting siren’s song.
Ask yourself are you the followed or the follower?
