Shox Appeal

Words by Aba

Sex doesn’t sell music videos anymore – but shocking scenes do!

There was a time when sex was enough to sell. But in the current world of music videos, it takes more then booty-shaking and lip-flapping to get the kids talking. Enter Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s ‘Telephone’ – pop culture’s attempt to delve into ‘high art’, which to Hollywood must mean any thing that involves thinking.

A friend remarked that the ‘controversial’ nine minute clip was just a visually pleasing distraction to an otherwise forgettable song. And as much as the chorus bounces through my head – he’s got a point. The ‘shock’ factor gets people talking more than Nelly’s “Pu**y-poppin Explicit Version” ever could. Sex is so noughties! Give me something that both confuses and entertains me so that I have to watch it over and over until I understand, and so that maybe it offends enough people to get into the news and go viral.

In a world where you can say ‘two girls one cup’ and everyone from nine year olds to grandmas will know what you are talking about, I think its safe to say that in order to leave a lasting impression on a modern person’s mind (and by modern I mean anyone with Internet access), you’re going to have to opt for scenes of a violent, thought-provoking, belief challenging, essentially offensive nature.

And on that note, I refer you to MIA’s latest offering….
