Soho Shorts – Review

Words by Yesim
We were lucky enough to be invited to attend the London based film festival - Soho Shorts. Truth be told, it was our first ever experience of anything like this, and we absolutely loved it. Broken down into several distinct categories, it aimed to showcase the very best in upcoming directorial and artistic talent.
Animation:
A veritable feast of creativity and visual splendour. This showing was rammed to the rafters with attendees looking to catch a glimpse of the hotly anticipated entrants. Many of the directors used this medium and fairytale inspired, childlike stories to convey serious and often disturbing messages. One such piece (our favourite in fact) was simply entitled ‘Breakfast’, it told the story of modern commercial farming through the eyes of the farmyard animals. Not only visually stunning but it made everyone realise how pitiful the lives are of the animals we eat.
International:
A wide array of different styles and genres from bright young sparks across the globe. The films ranged in budget and expertise from the amateur to the professional, but each was worthy of it’s own merit. Highlights included the amusing and superbly acted Swedish entry “Love Child” directed by Daniel Wirtberg (co-director or the music video for “Burial” by Mike Snow, which was an entry in the music video category); and the artistic and thought provoking Swiss/Serbian entry “8” directed by Acim Vasic. The stand out entry was however Irish entry “The Pool” directed by Thomas Hefferon, which is soon to premier at the Tribeca film festival in New York.
Music Video:
One of the best attended categories, this contained many familiar videos that you’ve probably seen already such as Faithless’ “Not going home” as well as some lesser known gems that you probably haven’t like Swedish rapper Timbuktu’s Grammy award winning “Valj Mej” directed by Daniel Wirtberg and Jonas RudstrÖm.
See you next year!
