Hipsters Don’t Dance

Hipsters Don’t Dance is an established DJ duo (Hootie Who? + Kazabon) and club night, featuring a variety of music including funky, hip hop, electro, dancehall and party tunes. Founded in 2009 these bright, young upstarts are also resident DJs at Aint It Black (East Village) and have performed at a variety of venues both in London and across the globe.
Their mantra is to deliver a unique and exciting nightclub experience that gets back to the roots of a good ‘ol knees up and doesn’t take itself too seriously unlike those all crusading hipsters. In between laying down some fresh tracks and prepping for their next big night in October; We were lucky enough to catch a few minutes with the innovators for an exclusive interview:
What’s your story?
We were both djing independently before we met, Hootie Who? on and off for 9 years and Kazabon for 2 years. We are still relatively new in promoting game, we have been running Hipsters Dont Dance for almost a year now, our birthday is in November. We met at a club night called Aint it Black when it was at Favela Chic, we were both regulars at the night and Chonsak (one of the Aint it Black promoters and now the new resident dj at Hipsters Dont Dance) introduced us. We immediately hit it off and the idea for Hipsters Dont Dance came shortly afterwards.
What was your inspiration for the night?
We grew tired of certain aspects of the current scene, especially the trend of standing around posing, and not engaging with the music. During one party in particular we wondered why we were constantly being filmed – it was because we were two of the few people in a full rave that were actually dancing. It was at that moment that we came up with the name Hipsters Dont Dance and it has since become a bit of a running joke. Great music + great people = good times!
What sets you apart from other nights/DJs?
We both come from different musical backgrounds and no two sets are ever the same. Our styles vary from Bmore, Juke, Funky, Hip Hop, Bassline, Bashment, Garage, Tropical, Afrobeat and Grime, in our book a good tune is a good tune no matter what genre it stems from. We like to book up-and-comers alongside our headliners to give our crowd variety, plus supporting local, home-grown talent. Its all just to get people dancing!
Anything big planned for the future?
In the immediate future we have two of our favourite artists lined up to go head to head for a soundclash. There are also talks of some Hipsters Dont Dance tshirts, Our ultimate goal is to collaborate with some of favourite promoters and run a soundsystem at Notting Hill Carnival in 2011.
