DMC World Championships 2010

Last week we were invited to KOKO London to check out the DMC 2010 World DJ Championships. The top ten turntablists from all over the world were given only a few minutes each to showcase their dexterity on the decks. Judging the ten hopefuls was a panel of past winners and scratching experts.
Although we weren’t 100% sure what the judges were looking out for (not being resident DJs ourselves!) we had our crown favourite – DJ Blu from Japan tore it up, reworking classic hip hop tunes into new experimental tracks – a real contrast to the weird and wonderful sets spun by his competitors. Some serious creative talent had gone into choosing each DJ’s set with numerous samples from films and some classic cuts.
Through the battles came one champ, DJ LigOne from France was voted the DMC World Champion. Like all the DJs he scratched hard, whipped up the crowd (scratching behind his back and through his legs!) and demonstrated his beat juggling skills. But when it came down to it, he had the technical edge that won him the world title.
Other highlights of the night included the beatbox champion Eklips, who tore the crowd up with his version of Daft Punk’s ‘Robot Rock’, and an old school set from scratch innovator Grand Wizzard Theodore.
If you want to check out the full list of results go to the DMC Champs site. We can’t wait for what next year’s competitors have lined up for us!
