Hello January, We Meet Again

Words by Aba
As the partying ends on New Years Day, so too does the guilt free indulgence that helps December pass so quickly. Gone is the reckless abandon we happily exert over eating, drinking and dressing during the holiday season. And in come the irritating things that remind you January has arrived: sale shopping, rain, and endless TV adverts for dating and weight loss sites.
The first day back to work then begs for the first gym workout of the New Year… maybe. But all you really want now that a New Year has arrived is for it to be summer. A time where it’s OK to chill out, lay back and cut loose. Not straighten up, work out and cut back. You want a chance to shoot the breeze and chat shit. Instead, January chat is shoddy. Colleagues make conversation by asking you about your New Years resolutions. Yes, that dreaded ‘r’ word. Why must a New Year mean a New You? I thought the December me was pretty tip top, in all honesty. Which brings me to my point.
I propose we make January less hostile by letting our Yuletide party spirit linger into the New Year. Don’t hang up your party hat when the hangover subsides on New Years Day. Keep on partying as long as your bank balance lets you. And when that fails, crash a house party. Don’t swear off booze. Just switch drinks. Abandon red wine and opt for a vodka orange, it even gets you one of your five a day. And whatever you do, don’t hit the gym. It’s still too cold, too wet and too dark outside. And, more importantly, you’ll make the rest of us feel bad.
