New Club Kids

We present here the new photobook from Oggy Yordanov. A glorious reel of photos offering an insight into the beautiful mess that is clubbing in the Noughties. Not your usual club scene mind, this is the alternative, surreal and erotic sub-culture of crazy kids who love to party!
The Noughties saw the rise of a new generation of Club Kids, they dress outrageously, with a penchant for kitsch and anti-fashion. Often with a mixture of their own self-made outfits and carefully selected labels (predominantly Vivienne Westwood), oversized accessories, excessive amounts of make-up and frequently highly androgynous looks, these flamboyant clubbers have created a vibrant New Club Kids’ scene in London’s bohemian nightlife underground.
We were lucky enough to grab an interview with Oggy, the man behind the book, below is our chat:
Who are you?
Artist/photographer based in London and still a party kid at the age of 32!
What inspired you to shoot the book?
The creative and artistic energy that is on display at these parties is a big inspiration for these portraits. Ever since the first time I stepped into Kashpoint and saw what is happening there, how people are dressed and the lengths they would go to in order to look amazing, different or weird even.
It’s really inspiring and rather surreal when everyone around you is looking like comic book character or something out-of-this-world. It’s a different reality. You go to the club and for 5-6 hours you are in a different world. Escapism, you might want to call it. Or plain exhibitionism? It could be both.
What is your favourite shot?
This is a tough one. I have at least 20 favourite shots. The cover being one of them, of course. But if I still have to name just one, it must be the Grace Jones shot from Bungalow 8 a few years back. She had so much fun, the minute she saw the camera, she became crazy. This girl was next to her and she just grabbed her boobs and posed for the shot like it’s so natural.
I’m not bothered about celebrities and you will see there are hardly any in the book. Bjork, Skin and few more were going to be in, but didn’t make it in the final edit. It’s about the real people, so there.
