True Romance

Words by Georgie.

“It is impossible not to fall in love” – this is what the Independent said about the Secret Garden Party festival in 2010. As a regular festival-goer and true romantic, this statement only heightens my urge to become immersed in this annual event that is fast-becoming not only all the rage, but somewhere any self respecting scenester wants to show their face.

Despite the ever-increasing commercialisation of popular festivals, SGP has consistently resisted selling itself out. True to their word, the gathering remains entirely independent of corporate sponsorship and instead dedicates itself to moments of ‘random brilliance’, as proclaimed on their website. Indeed, the elements of the festival seem to simply get better and better. This year, attendees are promised a floating dance floor, a sauna, 12-minute lectures on anything from storytelling to improvisation, and a line-up that might just push you over the edge. Bag Raiders, Andy C, Filthy Dukes, Plump DJs and The Whip are just a few precious nuggets amongst a host of acts that will literally blow your mind.

There is no doubt that, with festivals sprouting throughout the UK promising something close to an out-of-body experience, some are destined to disappoint. But, the buck may just stop at SGP. These words may be causing those who haven’t bagged a golden ticket before the dreaded words ‘SOLD OUT’ appear on Ticketmaster severe pain, but never fear – some are going for £350 on eBay. And to fall in love? Who wouldn’t seriously consider it.
