Utting – Mum’s Birthday Mix
The nicest guy in electro, our main man – Utting just keeps getting sweeter and sweeter. He’s that kind of guy you could take home to da fam on a Sunday lunch and have your gran cutting shapes in no time. He not only made his lovely mum a soulfully chilled birthday mix, he was also kind enough to grant us an audience for an interview:
Why did you make the mix?
All the songs are tracks that my mum has raised me listening to, or songs that I think she will like but not have heard yet.
We both have a common love for Jesus so the gospel tracks speak of that. She introduced me to Lauryn Hill (we used played that tape in our Nissan Serena loud!), Soul II Soul (although our dog tried to eat the vinyl, the sleeve of which still has bite marks on it), and of course Cheryl Lynn. The other tracks are all newer, but I feel are a continuation of the music she would play to me as a kid.
The mix is a little different from your previous work, are you trying out a new music direction?
All the tracks are tracks I love and listen to on the regs, but don’t necessarily play out. I suppose the difference with this mix is that I was making it just for my mum, so the selection changes accordingly.
Having said that I’m not sure I have one music direction, I think I’ve probably got at least two, or maybe one really big one?! Anyway, I think they all have a common element of soul that I found in the tracks I heard as a young’un, like the Jamie XX remix of Adele still has the soul (or at least a portion of it) I can hear in Lauryn Hill tracks, even though the sound is notably different in style.
Any other projects/nights coming up that we should watch out for?
